How to navigate Galileo Web

galileoWeb.org is a community of thematically and hierarchically linked weblogs (easily updated websites) initiated and supported by our 'Li-Blog-ary', and maintained by our teachers, staff and students. By using the "drop down" navigation bar at the top of pages within the community, you can click through sites representing student clubs, parent organizations and services, individual teachers, curricular departments and our rich library of online research tools. (See the example below, in which the Parents menu is extended.)

History and goals:

We began deployment in August of 2003, working with teachers in one-to-one coaching sessions. In June, 2004, we sponsored a four day training for 19 teachers. Since then, library staff and early adopter teachers in various departments have provided further coaching sessions.

Our aim is to provide a powerful, reliable, and easy-to-use set of digital tools for our teachers and students. In this early stage of deployment, we are focusing on five goals:

To provide school information and news to groups within our community
To guide community members to resources
To provide online work spaces for students' works-in-progress
To publish exemplary teacher and student work
To explore and evaluate new technologies for teaching and learning

Links above connect to brief explanations and a selection of sample sites for each of the goals. By clicking on the links, you can explore examples of tech implementation by our staff, parents and students. We've organized the links, but you needn't follow our ordering. Explore. READ THE SCREENS.

Some people describe our websites as 'weblogs,' and to a certain extent they are. We use a sophisticated content management system, Userland's Manila software, which provides us with much more than weblog tools. We express appreciation for the assistance of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Web Team, and support from UC Berkeley's Bay Area Writing Project.
