Call for Artists

Everyone in the Galileo community is invited to participate in an art exhibition about San Francisco.

We're looking for artists to submit solo projects and to participate in large collaborative pieces of art.
See Mr. Berman in the Library during lunch or after school for more information.

Remember - art can be more about the idea than about drawing or painting.

In October, students who visited the library were asked to draw a picture of something that scares them.

Then the students hung their drawings near a book about their fear. In this way the students confronted their fears with knowledge.

Art and Writing Contest - $$$ for Asian Americans

Galileo students could take home lots of cash from this contest.

Their looking for essays or 8 1/2" x 11" drawings on the theme of "Winning and Losing, Competition and Teamwork" - Students of all backgrounds are invited to submit entries, including those of Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, other Asian or Pacific Islander ethnicities, or mixed heritage.

The Creativity God is Pleased

The god of Creativity (created by Todd Berman) is pleased as it watches Mr. Holmes' class create a new pantheon of deities to preside over San Francisco. Just as Homer wrote about Greek gods to promote certain values to his fellow Grecians, Mr. Holmes' students are creating a set of gods to help San Franciscans navigate the dangers of the modern world.

Have you explored all of the library's online and hard copy resources?

Please, take a moment to do so and see what you can share with your students.

The Li-Blog-ary now has pages full of research links. Click on the drop-down "Reseach" menu in the upper right of the Galileoweb screen to find research information on a variety of topics. Select "All" from this menu for a page full of useful research links as copied from the ISA website.

How about good old fashioned books?

Select "Catalog" from the "Research" drop-down menu to get to the library page. Click on the "Catalog" tab and begin searching our collection by title, author or subject.

Are there professional resources for teachers?

A collection of professional books, magazines and binders can now be found behind the graphic novels, near the check-out computers.

A Library Art Show - December 5

The Galileo Academy Library will become an art gallery for a day.
Noon to 6pm
Wednesday, December 5.
Teachers are invited to bring their classes for a tour.

Some of the art that will be featured:

Moffett's Inferno - a visual reinterpretion of Dante's Inferno in acrylic and mixed media by Ms. Moffett's 2nd Period class
What Are You Afraid Of? - a collaborative installation created by students confronting their fears in the library
Prophe-See TV - the future of our own creation, created collaboratively on a scroll of canvas
Courtney Clicks - photography by Gerry Courtney
G-House Studios Films - Flash and video films created in room 101.

Galileo Book Review is Launched

There's a new way for students to share their book recommendations. The Galileo Book Review is notebook, decorated by Teakeysha Britton, where students write about a book they like and say why other people should read it.

To participate students should write the book's title, the date, the author, the call number and a short explanation of why we should read the book.

Reviews can be written directly into the book or on any 8.5" x 5" paper (half of a letter).

Some English teachers may give extra credit for participation.

Rotary Club Donates Books

A member of the San Francisco Rotary club presents a donation of 16 new books on behalf of the guest speakers they have hosted. The books are by such esteemed authors as Shel Silverstein, Deepak Chopra and Peter Benchely and will be a welcome part of the Galileo Academy Library collection. Rheanna and Zen accepted the books on behalf of the library's S-L-A-Cers.

What Are Your Afraid Of? Confronting your fears in the Library.

This drawing by Melodie is to help advertise the collaborative, educational, decorative art project we are conducting in the Galileo Academy Library.

Students draw something that they are afraid of, then hang that drawing by books that are about that topic. This helps students learn how to find books as they decorate the library. Once they find these books, the students can then read about their fears and overcome those fears through with knowledge.
